Voice over - Tips for Choosing a Narrator
So, you have decided that you are in need of professional narrating services, but…who should you choose? Could any narrator “do the job”? Are there narrators who specialize in one thing, but not in another?
OK. Let’s clear the air.
First – narration is a skilled profession like any other and it should be treated accordingly.
Therefore, you should choose a narrator from the largest selection possible; the larger the “bank” of narrators the bigger the chance that you will find the narrator who suits your specifications best.
Moreover, the narrator must speak the language perfectly because no one will accept recordings with grammatical errors or pronunciation mistakes.
Foreign language narration and announcement is even more demanding as you need someone who speaks the language as a mother tongue, proper articulation and the correct dialect. You wouldn’t want a narrator with an accent or incorrect pronunciation. The challenge is; being able to acquire the correct foreign narrator for the precise language required.
Now, once you have screened and chosen the potential talents and/or narrators who suit your narration needs, narrow down your selections by testing their narration proficiency.
Some narrators are excellent for TV and radio commercials; some are perfect for long texts. Keep in mind not all narrators have acting skills!
But those requirements aren’t enough. What good is an excellent narrator if you don’t record in a professional sound studio?
Second - there are sound studios that specialize in narration, announcement and voiceover recordings.
It isn’t too difficult to find a studio with professional sound recording equipment, but narration recording isn’t an easy task.
Naturally, you want the assurance that you will receive the qualitative and professional recording that you deserve so it is very important that the studio have vast experience in narration recording.
Third - Prices/Rates/Fees. Now for the moment of truth, how much does it all cost?
Can one acquire professional narration services for an affordable price?
Obviously, every project has its own desires and requirements which must be priced separately.
However, I can provide you with one tip. Exceptionally cheap narration services should be a big warning sign, “you always get what you pay for”.
It is highly likely that inexperienced or amateur narrators will make far more errors and will take longer to get it right. Which means you will have to spend more time in the studio and studio time is priced by the hour.
In the end it is foreseeable that the amateur product will not be as satisfying and will probably end up costing you more money to produce.
To recap – you need to have a wide variety of options when choosing a narrator or announcer, and a professional sound studio to do the work.
Also, you could easily make this process more efficient and significantly more cost effective by utilizing a studio which does both; a professional sound studio offering a wide variety of announcers and narrators in addition to providing of all the services you require for narration, recording, editing, etc.
In summary – it is crucial to find a recording studio that specializes in narration, announcement and voiceover recording narration.
Furthermore, talented announcing or narration skills drastically improve the quality of any project; therefore, it is important to choose a good, experienced narrator who fits the job.
We hope that our tips have been of assistance to you. Happy recording!
